A poker table is usually laid out with a 52-card deck. The deck is dealt clockwise around the table. The dealer may choose to shuffle the deck or leave the cards face up. If the dealer decides to shuffle the deck, he or she must offer the pack to the opponent for cut.
Each player’s hand is dealt in turn. Some games, like draw poker, only allow the player to discard a few of the cards. After the cards are dealt, another round of betting is held. This is called the betting interval.

Poker may be played with any number of players. The ideal number is six to eight. Although the rules and variation vary, the ideal poker game involves a large number of players and has at least two rounds of betting.
In poker, each player must place a certain amount of chips into the pot. These chips are often counted or swapped for money in order to determine the winner. There are three basic forms of forced bets: the ante, the blind, and the bluff.
When the jack of diamonds, king of hearts, or jack of spades is revealed, the player becomes the dealer. Other players have the option of folding, or they can check. Depending on the game, they may be required to contribute to the pot before the deal.
Typically, the cards are shuffled, and each player is given a complete hand. All but the first player folds during the betting interval. Players can bluff by betting they have the best hand. But a bluff can be thwarted by other players who bet against the bluffer.
